Lundgren warned of the impact of the UK government’s actions on the aviation industry

The CEO of EasyJet (LON: EZJ) said Wednesday that he did not expect it to be the most important obstacle for the European travel season, when coronavirus “India tensions” approaches.

Johann Landglen added that another summer without travel is disastrous for the UK aviation industry.

The UK has so far imposed strict restrictions on travel at most holiday destinations, undermining both the airline and the travel industry. This is now spreading across the UK in light of the discovery of new variants first discovered in India.

All across the continent, Germany bans mandatory travel, while France suggests similar policies.

Lundgren said the industry’s future could be on track if they are not allowed to return to more normal travel modes in time for the summer.

“I don’t think that UK aviation as an industry can have another lost summer without any serious consequences,” he told Wednesday at an online industry event.

Lundgren argues that the new variant is not a major concern as the vaccine protects against it.

“I don’t think the outlook is… that summer is ruined due to the Indian variant,” he added.

Lundgren’s main concern is that the UK is sticking to its current policy of opening Portugal to Britons as its only major travel destination.

EasyJet’s stock price fell 0.3% to 982.40p as the end of the day approaches.
