EasyJet expects a loss of £1.1 billion, but remains optimistic

EasyJet has seen a 400% surge in bookings over Christmas due to relaxing travel restrictions.

Despite the recovery, the company expects a pre-tax loss of £1.1 billion that year, saying it hopes to fly 70% of its pre-pandemic level this quarter.

The group added 100,000 seats to destinations that include Egypt, Türkiye and the Canary Islands.

Russ Mold, investment director at AJ Bell, commented: “Finally, dark clouds are parting, bright lights are in. Limitations are relaxed, rules are simplified, and travelers are regaining their appetite for flying again.

“EasyJet has declared ‘recovery’ in progress’, and losses have been narrowed and have adequate reservations to ensure capacity increases for the last three months of 2021.

“It was helped by a decent demand for the sun for a week during the October half. Individuals want to get a slice of ocean and sun that was denied this summer and last year.”
