Exchange-Traded funds, or ETFs, are often low-cost products for investors to track popular indexes and leverage the selection of experienced managers as they try to beat the market. The best act as a building block in your portfolio, and unlike open-ended mutual funds, all ETFs trade all day in exchange.

In May 2025, the best-performing ETFs included the stock natural resources fund Vanek Uranium and the nuclear technology UCITS ETF Nucl and Global X-Uranium UCITS ETF urn. The data in this article is sourced from Morningstar Direct.

Screening of best performance ETFs

To find the best performance ETFs of the month, we screened them in the Morningstar fairness, allocation, or fixed income categories available in the UK. We have excluded ETFs with total assets of ETFS and ETFs known as ETNs with less than $25 million (£18.5 million). We also ruled out funds that fall under the Morningstar “Trading” category, as these funds are designed for active traders and are not suitable for long-term investors.

Within our list, six funds were divided into the Stock Technology category, with the average name up 8.95% in May.

Vaneck Uranium and Nuclear Technologies UCits ETF

The 452 million pound Vanek Uranium and Nuclear Technology UCITS ETF was the best-performing ETF in May with a return of 28.46%. Passively managed Vannek ETF defeated 4.90% profit in the monthly Morningstar Equity Natural Resources category average fund. Over the past 12 months, the Vaneck Uranium and Nuclear Technologies Ucits ETF has returned 23.25%, reducing losses of less than 9.72% for the average funds in that category, bringing the ETF to the 1st percentile.

The Vaneck Uranium and Nuclear Technologies Ucits ETF has a bronze morning star medalist rating. It was released in February 2023.

Global X Uranium UCITS ETF

Morningstar Rating: ★★★★Expense Ratio: 0.70%Morningstar Category: Equity Natural Resources

The second-best performing ETF in May was the £191 million Global X-uranium Ucits ETF. The passively managed Global X ETF returned 28.44%, surpassing the average Equity Natural Resources Fund, which earned 4.90%. Looking back at last year, the Global X-Uranium UCITS ETF fell 1.94%, down from the 9.72% loss of the average fund in the category, with the ETF at the 14th percentile.

The neutral rating Global X-Uranium UCITS ETF was released in April 2022.

Vaneck Crypto & Blockchain Innovators UCits ETF

The £317 million Vaneck Crypto & Blockchain Innovators Ucits ETF ranked third for the month, returning 23.64%. Passively managed Vaneck ETF exceeded the average return on funds of 8.95% in the equity technology category in May. Over the past 12 months, Vaneck ETF has returned 23.66%, surpassing the 8.49% profit of the average fund in that category, bringing the ETF to the 11th percentile.

Released in April 2021, Vaneck Crypto & Blockchain Innovators Ucits ETF has a bronze Morning Star medalist rating.

WisdomTree Blockchain UCits ETF

Morningstar Rating: n/a Expense Ratio: 0.45% Morningstar Category: Equity Technology

With a 17.23% return, the £29 million WisdomTree Blockchain UCits ETF ranked fourth in May. The passively managed WisdomTree ETF surpassed the average Equity Technology Fund’s 8.95% return. Last year, the fund won 30.54% above the category’s 8.49% return on capital, reaching the 6th percentile for that period.

The WisdomTree Blockchain UCits ETF has not yet been awarded a Morning Star Medalist rating.

Investco Coinshares Global Blockchain UCits ETF

The fifth-best-performing ETF was the £555 million Invesco Coinshares Global Blockchain UCits ETF, which won 16.94% in May. This passively managed Invesco ETF won the average return on capital of 8.95% in the equity technology category. Over the past 12 months, Invesco Coinshares Global Blockchain Ucits Etf has risen by 19.84%, surpassing the 8.49% return of the average fund in that category, placing it in the 16th percentile.

Released in March 2019, the Invesco Coinshares Global Blockchain UCits ETF has a bronze rating by Morning Star Medalist.

Amundi MSCI Semiconductors Ucits ETF

The £581 million Amundi MSCI Semiconductors UCits ETF is the sixth-best performance UK ETF in May with a return of 15.78%. Passively managed Amundi ETF returns exceeded the 8.95% profit of the average fund in the Morningstar Equity Technology category. Looking back at last year, the Amundi MSCI Semiconductor UCITS ETF returned 2.83%, below the 8.49% return of the average fund in that category, bringing the ETF to the 62nd percentile.

The Amundi MSCI Semiconductor Ucits ETF has not yet been awarded a Morning Star Medalist rating.

hanetf icav – Sprott Uranium Miners ucits etf

Morning Star Rating: n/a Expense Ratio: 0.85% Morning Star Category: Stock Natural Resources

The seventh-performing ETF in May was the £147 million Hanetf Sprott Uranium Miners Ucits etf. Passively managed HANETF ETF returned 15.03%, surpassing the average stock natural resources fund, which earned 4.90%. Looking back at the past 12 months, the Hanetf Sprott Uranium Miners UCits ETF fell 30.28%, further down from the category’s average funds’ 9.72% loss, with the ETF at the 97th percentile.

The Hanetf Sprott Uranium Miners Ucits ETF has a Morning Star Medalist Bronze rating. It was released in May 2022.

ARK Artificial Intelligence & Robot UCITS ETF

Morningstar Rating: n/a Expense Ratio: 0.75% Morningstar Category: Equity Technology

The £53 million ARK Artificial Intelligence and Robotics UCITS ETF ranked 8th in the month, returning 14.78%. The aggressively managed ARK ETF has surpassed an average increase of 8.95% in equity technology category funds. Last year, the ARK ETF returned 52.64%, becoming the second percentile for performance ahead of an 8.49% return for the average fund in that category.

The neutral rated ARK Artificial Intelligence & Robot UCITS ETF was released in April 2024.

iShares Blockchain Technology UCITS ETF

Morningstar Rating: n/a Expense Ratio: 0.50% Morningstar Category: Equity Technology

With a profit of 14.58%, the £116 million iShares blockchain technology Ucits ETF ranked 9th in May. Passively managed iShares ETF surpassed the average equity technology fund’s return of 8.95%. Over the past 12 months, the fund has lately returned 6.33% to its category’s 8.49% return on funds, placing it in the 53rd percentile.

Released in September 2022, iShares Blockchain Technology UCITS ETF has a rating of Bronze Morning Star Medalist.

Wisdomtree Europe Defense Ucits ETF

Morningstar Rating: N/A Expense Ratio: 0.40% Morningstar Category: Stock Industry Materials

The 10th-highest performance ETF was the £1.8 billion Wisdomtree Europe Defense Ucits ETF, which won 14.49% in May. Passively managed WisdomTree ETF won the average return on capital of 6.77% in the Equity Industrial Materials category. The fund was first launched in March 2025 and as a result, it has no track record for a year.

The Wisdomtree Europe Defense Ucits ETF has not yet been awarded a Morning Star Medalist rating.
