HSBC closes 82 UK branches

HSBC has announced plans to close 82 branches as the group focuses on online banking.

The banking group says there is minimal redundancy as staff are relocated to “appropriate nearby locations” despite the closure. It has not stated how many jobs will be affected.

The number of UK branches has dropped to 511, with the decision reflecting “local market trends, customer behavior and branch use.”

“We’re looking forward to seeing you in the future,” said Jackie Uhi, network director at HSBC UK. “In recent years, we know that there has been an increase in digital options to make our customers easier to live, allowing our customers to control their finances primarily through online and mobile banking. The group said that even before the pandemic, the number of customers using bank branches has fallen by a third over the past five years.

Last year, the group unveiled a major restructuring plan, where it announced plans to cut 35,000 jobs worldwide.

The bank said that 90% of all customer contacts currently via telephone, internet or smartphone.

TSB recently announced the closure of 164 branches in the UK.

Debbie Crosby, CEO of TSB, said: “Closing any of the branches is by no means an easy decision, but our customers are banking differently.

“We are restructuring our business, transforming our customer experience and setting us up for the future.

“This means finding the right balance between high street branches and digital platforms, allowing us to provide the best experience for our individual and business customers across the UK.”
