Biden began his speech saying, “Science cannot be denied.”
“The cost of omission is simply going to be attached… we have to step up,” he added.
Since Biden replaced Trump in January 2021, he has worked together to put climate change at the forefront of the country’s agenda. The pledge is even twice as much as its previous commitment.
Biden continued: “Scientists say this is a decisive decade, a decade where we must make decisions to avoid the worst outcome of the climate crisis.”
Biden has issued a warning that it is up to the nation to gather together to resolve the climate crisis.
“This is not only a moral obligation, an economic obligation, but also a moment of extraordinary possibilities.”
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised the move by the US president.
“It’s important for us all to show that this isn’t just the expensive, politically modified green act of bunny hugs,” Johnson said.
“Let’s use this extraordinary moment and the incredible technology we are working on to make this decade a moment of decisive change in the fight against climate change.
President Xi Jinping, China, who has been under much scrutiny about his country’s emissions, also spoke at the summit.
“We have achieved a peak carbon footprint before 2030 and strive to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060,” XI said.
He added:
President Joe Biden also proposes plans to raise taxes to America’s wealthiest people, including the biggest rise in taxes on investment returns.
The proposal aims to provide one-on-one funding for childcare, universal kindergarten education and paid leave for workers, Reuters reported.
