New data shows that new UK car registrations plummeted 35% year-on-year in September this year due to a global shortage of semiconductors.
September of the 23 years is the weakest. This is a time of year when cars are often strong when people often get the latest license plates.
Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said 214,000 units were sold in September. SMMT also said that over 32,000 battery-powered vehicles were registered last month. This is a new record.
Car sales in Türkiye and Italy also fell below last month. This is because countries around the world have suffered a shortage of semiconductors.
The final registration data will be released by SMMT later on Tuesday.
