Total supermarket sales fell 2.9% from the previous year
While supermarket sales surged in March as shoppers took advantage of the opportunity to buy clothes, other non-essential outlets remained closed.
The numbers are coming as a signal of demand surge as stores are ready to reopen across the UK.

In the four weeks ended March 27th, supermarket sales doubled to £313 million.
Additionally, home and garden sales have also reached £175 million in anticipation of outdoor socialisation through spring and summer.
According to Nielsen Research, total supermarket sales fell 2.9% from the previous year. In March 2020, many people were stockpiling and panic buying, fearing the worst ahead of the opposing lockdown.
UK shoppers spent £1 billion on their products compared to the same period in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic.
The fastest growing supermarket in the last three months was Lidl, followed by Iceland and Aldi.
Of the Big 4 supermarkets, Asda and Morrisons grew the fastest.
