Tesco is struggling to hire HGV drivers despite improving wages

Tesco has issued a warning to the government, suggesting that a shortage could occur across the country, leading to empty shelves as a result of a shortage of HGV drivers.

“Our concern is that photos of empty shelves get ten times worse by Christmas and then panic purchases,” said Andrew Uhlfenden, director of distribution and fulfillment at the UK Tesco, in the Cabinet. He spoke at a government office meeting.

This is despite Tesco improving its driver reward package and offering bonuses worth £1,000.

According to Woolfenden, the FTSE 100 company faces an surplus of 800 drivers, confirming that Tesco has struggled to hire new drivers over the past few months.

“There’s no choice on the same level as before,” said Steve Murrells, the cooperative’s chief executive, warned of the approaching price hikes and supply issues.

Murrells believes shoppers can get what they need, but says some product lines will be limited.

A Tesco spokesperson added: The industry-wide shortage of HGV drivers has led to several distribution challenges, but to address these and plan for the next few months so that customers can get everything they need. I’m working hard. ”

Tesco’s shares fell 0.41% on Thursday.
