The UK government pledges to reduce its carbon emissions by 78% by 2035
The UK is preparing to hold the UN COP26 summit in the second half of 2021, and will pledge to further reduce its carbon emissions.
Over the next few days, Boris Johnson pledged to reduce UK carbon emissions by 78% by 2035, reaching the level he last saw in 1990.
The new goals will be revealed ahead of the major US climate summit on Thursday, with Joe Biden submitting his own goals to reduce US carbon emissions.
The UK’s latest goal is already one of the most ambitious of the world’s major economies, with its previous goal of reducing emissions by 68% by 2030.
Achieving an ambitious target can be a number of factors. First, the UK needs to implement power systems that operate without generating carbon emissions. Secondly, we need to reduce meat and dairy consumption. Third, low carbon heating systems need to be introduced in the home, and finally, more forests need to be planted.
