Vaccine passports for those remaining in the UK: “Impossible”
The UK government is considering options for rapid testing of the coronavirus as a route to reopening places where social distancing is not feasible.
“The Quick Turnaround Test is part of a plan to regain mass gatherings,” one insider said.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said a quick test is the best route to hosting venues and events where people usually gather in the largest crowd.
According to the Prime Minister, allowing people to safely return to entertainment value is “the hardest to break.”
Boris Johnson also said that vaccine passports may be required for international travel, but that would be rare for those who remain in the UK.
“Some countries would obviously want to argue that people who come to their countries have evidence of vaccination.
“The thing we don’t think we have in this country is that we did, but a vaccination passport is that we can go to, say, a pub.”
The government is weighing the plans for a “ticket-on-test” scheme in which participants take a simple turnaround test for the coronavirus, as part of participating in large gatherings such as concerts.
“That kind of thing really helps open things up with a large number of social distancing affects your ability to work economically,” a source told the Financial Times.
The World Health Organization envoy on the coronavirus supported this approach as a way to restore the UK to normalcy.
“The secret to returning to some degree of normality for most of us will be the availability of truly reliable, super-kick tests,” he told Good Morning Britain.
