BA and AMEX reveal how cardholders will ultimately earn travel points

British Airways and American Express have revealed details on how to earn points to unlock perks with the airline’s revamped passenger loyalty scheme.

The announcement comes six months after BA elicited criticism over its planned switch to its revenue-based loyalty program. This program pays off bookings for flights or packages on tierpoints rather than travel or travel classes.

They then announced the new British Airways Club loyalty scheme in April, but did not provide further information on how users can earn tier points from spending on BA Premium and American Express Cards.

Finally, this week it was announced that travelers can earn up to 2,500 tier points if they spend £25,000 on their AMEX cards and allow perks such as early boarding, priority check-in, lounge access and more.

Cardholders will also be automatically recognized by the airline as “Thank you for your loyalty” for 500 tier points.

Members who spend £15,000 will be awarded 750 tier points after registration and 750 points for spending an additional £5,000.

The final 1,000 points will be awarded after spending up to £25,000 and 2,500 tier points totaling £5,000.

If the cardholder spends £25,000 in full before the offer ends in February next year, the 500 additions awarded in June will earn 3,000 tiers of points.

This jump gets the number of points close to the BA bronze status. This is set at 3,500 tiers of points.

Silver stats are reached when you score 20,000 points and then earn 7,500 points and gold.

To qualify, cardholders must sign up for the offer by January 2026.

The BA said in December that the change was part of a broader £7 billion transformation program. That is, he said, “There are more ways to get tier points than ever.”

It added that adjusting the points earned using pounds will result in BAs lined up with “models used by many other airline loyalty programs around the world.”
