Brussels plans to propose customs on Boeing aircraft to prepare for further retaliation in the event of a failed trade with Washington.

The European Commission, which implements EU trade policy, plans to include civil aircraft in its annual list of US imports of around 100 billion euros, according to two people familiar with the issue.

However, the measure will only take effect if the EU does not make sufficient progress in reducing US tariffs, they said. This measure must first be approved by a majority of member states’ aggravated.

On April 2, US President Donald Trump imposed a 20% minimum additional tariff on almost all exports from the EU as part of a so-called “mutual” measure. However, he cut this to 10% for 90 days on April 9th, allowing time for consultation.

US tariffs for 25% of EU steel, aluminum and cars remain intact.

The EU has suspended retaliatory tariffs on US goods of 21 billion euros, including Harley-Davidson motorcycles, poultry and clothing until July 14th to support the negotiation process.

The next wave of tariffs that involve aircraft and sometimes chemicals will likely still apply unless trade is reached, officials said.

The list of proposed targets will be sent to member countries today or tomorrow, but warned that they could still change.

Both the committee and Boeing declined to comment.
