Renault has been called upon by the French government to manufacture drones in Ukraine as unmanned aircraft systems became a central component of Kiev’s rebellion against Russian military attacks.
The French automaker was working with small drone experts to mass-produce drones under the plan in the first move by French companies to manufacture weapons in Ukrainian soil.
French defense minister Sebastian Lecorne told French broadcaster LCI on Friday evening that the automobile and defense companies will work together to set up production lines in a “completely unprecedented partnership” and supply drones to the Ukrainian army.
Renault confirmed on Sunday night that it had been approached by the French military ministry.
“There was a discussion, and at this stage we are waiting for details on this project, so no decision will be made,” a business spokesperson said.
The move marks the first time Renault has made defense equipment since World War II, when the R35 tank failed against German Panzer in the Battle of France.
This initiative proved that drones are a central pillar of Ukraine’s military strategy. They were key to last week’s attacks on Russian airfields, thousands of kilometers from Kiev, and a sign of how drone technology has helped transform military tactics.

For the past few years, the frontlines of Ukraine have been dominated by drones, and French production lines will help to enhance equipment production. Recorne said the US desire to leave Ukraine created a “alarm moment” in which European countries need to provide “robust” security assurances in Ukraine.
Lecornu said the move would be a “favourable situation for both parties” that would benefit the French military by obtaining “permanent tactical and operational training related to this frontline reality.”
Local workers will be hired to run the route in Ukraine, and businesses will not need to send French workers there, Lecorne added. If the plan is confirmed, it is not clear what kind of drones will be manufactured by Renault.
