Police can raid facilities based on information from the “Find My Phone” app and Bluetooth under new laws designed to crack down on theft and anti-social behaviour.
The Crime and Police Bill, which will be introduced in Congress on Tuesday, includes new measures to tackle “neighborhood crime.” For example, you no longer need a search warrant for facilities where stolen items have become electronically global.
Interior Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “In recent years, our towns and cities have seen street thefts being shot as organized gangs target mobile phones.”
“But it’s very frustrating for the victims to see where the stolen phone went, but not doing anything. That’s why we’re so frustrating to the victims. In order to crack down on these crimes that have been forced to do so, we are determined to give the police the strength they need to move faster.”
The new bill also prioritizes suppressing the growing issues of shoplifting and anti-social behaviour. In the year ended September 2024, police recorded more than 490,000 store theft crimes, a 23% increase over the past 12 months, and 1MN anti-social behaviour cases.
The bill effectively terminates theft immunity of goods under £200 and removes the law that makes it a minor offence that has only been tried in the judge’s court. There is also the introduction of new crimes that assault retail workers.
In a plan to reduce anti-social behaviour, a new “respect order” bans prolific criminals from town centres, and police say “hugely havoc in the community” including park off-road bikes and pavement electronic sumoters. You are given the authority to seize the vehicle causing it.
The new law will be strengthened by a planned recruitment of 13,000 extra neighborhood police staff.
Cooper said the new crime and police bill would “restore our streets and town centres, restore respect for law and order, and give police and the community the support and tools they need to tackle local crimes. He said that it is.
The bill also includes measures to crack down on violence against women and girls, economic and knife crime.
