The University of Edinburgh Supercomputer is expected to receive £750 million as part of Wednesday’s spending review, reversing a controversial decision to suspend funds made in the early days of Kiel Star.
The decision to fund the programme will serve as a great relief for academics and the industry. Scholars and the industry say computing power is needed to drive the early British AI industry and implement complex science simulations.
According to two people who were described about the plan, £750 million is alongside an additional £1 billion investment in AI research resources, another cluster of computers for AI research by academics and industry.
Shortly after coming to power last July, Labour pulled around £800 million pledged to the University of Edinburgh for the supercomputer, claiming that the previous conservative government could not properly allocate funds.
