Overall building materials increased by 10-15% this year

Material costs could rise by 10% over the next 12 months as the construction sector seeks to meet demand for new homes and infrastructure.

According to a survey of around 500 industry professionals carried out by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, RICS, 82% said material shortages were holding back the market in the second quarter.

The number of people responding this way is the highest since the survey was first conducted in 2012.

Just under two-thirds of survey participants responded that there is a labor shortage, specifically reporting that it is difficult to secure bricklayers and carpenters.

Construction projects are under pressure due to a shortage of truck drivers to transport materials, which has been exacerbated by the impact of the epidemic.

The Builders Federation has revealed that timber prices have increased by up to 100% this year, while building materials have generally increased by 10-15%.

John Newcombe, chief executive of the Federation of Builders, said a number of recent building projects had been halted due to the problem.
