Airinum founder Alexander Hjertström has been exploring his quest to combat poor air quality since childhood asthma was recovered on a trip to India in 2014. The threat posed by airborne viruses has been reduced since then, but the issue of poor air quality certainly is not the case.

The air quality in the enclosed space is generally worse than outdoors

Investors have proposed to Airinum that air purification in the car should be the next product. While that is probably counterintuitive for city residents, the air quality of the enclosed space is generally worse than outdoors, especially moving vehicles. A 2023 publication by Imperial College London explains that “automobile users experienced higher exposure levels than (air pollution) whether the windows are open or closed.

The filtering system in modern cars is getting better, but Hale (as you exhale and inhal) offers a standalone treatment, claiming to rule out 99% of airborne particles, including VOCs, dust and bacteria. The form screams “Bluetooth speaker,” but is easier to use than that. Sit neatly in the universal cup holder and turn on the power (up and down) using the ring at the top of the unit. It is relatively quiet and takes up to 24 hours to charge (depends on the speed of the fan selected). At red lights, you will know that the HEPA filter needs to be changed.

Designed for use in the car, it also functions as a portable, multipurpose case personal air purifier. The clip-on stand allows you to adjust the angle of the unit horizontally depending on whether you are sitting at a desk or reclining on the sofa. I began to find that gentle breeze comfortable and reassuring.

Fanttik produces a variety of useful tools. This is probably my favorite. A tire inflator with the size and shape of a chunky padlock. “u” is released to reveal a short hose with a standard Schrader valve connector. Set the desired PSI for your digital display (or use the default settings that are appropriate for your vehicle if you are unsure). There are issues dealing with Juggernauts, but once fully charged (via 5V over USB-C), it is perfect for top-up compact cars. Cyclists and rugby players appreciate the attachments that are suitable for bicycles and balls hidden in the base.

The perfect vacuum

Quickly recognised as Dyson cordless, this unit is billed as the most powerful handheld vacuum. I can’t prove this, but I foolishly put my hand on my electric head while the machine was on the “max” and let out a scream of shock as it secured my hands firmly on the unit. It handled beautifully the debris piling up rapidly in our family’s cars (dried mud, toddler snack crumbs) and used it for over a week that required an initial full charge (runtime is listed as 50 minutes). Three attachments – electric brushes, gap tools, combined brush/wide nozzles – are sufficient and small enough to jump into the garage shelf.

A comprehensive document of your car’s presence, day or night, this kit covers all bases. In its mind there is a rotating 360 degree dash cam that looks primarily straight, but when it detects creepy activity, or depending on your voice command, turn your eyes to its beads. An additional thumb-sized cam covers the back of the vehicle and provides a connection where a packed 4G module secured to the fuse box is always on (supplied to NB: SIM). Of course, everything is connected via a long USB cable and is neatly hidden. It requires some setup, but as it is said, the footage is clear. When the car parks, suspicious characters are warned that hover nearby.

Meet the car doctor

This semi-professional diagnostic tool – a 7-inch tablet in an essentially extremely sturdy case – creates reports with fault codes and descriptions, from airbags to tile pressure monitors, and scans the vehicle’s system. The thick cable is secured to the top of the tablet and runs to the OBD-II port of the car (most commonly under the steering wheel). Once the ignition and tablet are turned on, you can trigger a smart diagnostic mode that detects the creation of the vehicle and establishes parameters that can be measured. What you do with the resulting data depends on the functionality under the hood. My own strategy is to call out mechanics, but to call out compulsive tinkering, and something like a car would find it incredibly valuable.
