The City of Brussels has ordered Elon Musk to fully disclose recent changes made to the X advisory to step up investigations into the role of social media platforms in European politics.

An expanded investigation by the European Commission announced on Friday requires X to submit internal documents regarding its recommended algorithms. The European Commission has also issued a “preservation order” for all relevant documentation on how the algorithm may be modified in the future.

Additionally, EU regulators have requested access to information about how social media networks manage and amplify content.

The move follows complaints from German politicians that X’s algorithm is promoting far-right content ahead of the February 23 election. Musk supports the nationalist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and claims it will save Germany.

Asked whether the expansion of the investigation was a response to Musk’s controversial interview with AfD co-leader Alice Weidell last week, a committee spokesperson said the new request was “something that’s happening. “It will help us monitor the systems around all these events.”

But he said it was “completely independent of any political considerations or specific events.”

“We are committed to ensuring that all platforms operating within the EU comply with our laws, which aim to make the online environment fair, safe and democratic for all Europeans. ” said Hena Virkunen, head of digital at the European Commission.

X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
