Apple will be able to access artificial intelligence models for the first time for millions of app developers. This is because the technology giants are trying to leverage the vast hardware and software ecosystem to give them an edge over their competitors.

At a developer event held in Cupertino on Monday, CEO Tim Cook said the company is considering “taking advantage of the power of Apple Intelligence,” referring to the software’s AI overhaul, which was first announced at last year’s event.

Developers will be able to test features starting June 9th with a full consumer deployment in the fall, Cook said. AI features are only available on recent iPhone models.

Apple Software chief Craig Federighi said opening the AI model to third parties would “ignite a whole new wave of intelligent experiences that app users rely on every day.”

The model runs locally on Apple devices. This means that you don’t need to access cloud servers or network connections.

Federighi offered examples of puzzle apps that build personalized quizzes for users based on device notes, or hiking apps that select users’ trails based on personal preferences when there is no reception.

Access to Apple’s AI models is initially limited to small models that function locally on the device. We also built a larger cloud-based model, but cannot run natively on the device due to the large computing power needed.

Analysts have long asked how Apple will integrate and how AI capabilities could ultimately be monetized to the App Store business. This led to more than $30 billion in revenue in 2024.

Apple also introduces many other incremental updates, such as using models running locally on users’ devices, to live AI translations of calls and messages, and the ability to connect “Visual Search” features to content on users’ screen content.

Separately, Apple overhauls and integrates the appearance of various operating systems, known as the “widetest software design updates ever.” It uses an aesthetic called “Liquid Glass,” inspired by the Vision Pro operating system.

The latest push into the AI space is because they are concerned that Apple risks falling behind in technology races with Google, Samsung, Huawei and others to provide “AI smartphones.”

The first “Apple Intelligence” rollout was a hit snag, and the more sophisticated and conversational Siri Voice Assistant, announced at last year’s meeting, has yet to be rolled out. On Monday there was no mention of the updated Siri, which is considered extremely important to open up true “agent” AI capabilities on the iPhone.

Apple’s shares fell 1.4% on Monday afternoon.
